Sat:
SIL & MIL took Baby M for the day on Saturday. Hubby and I has some us time at home (wink).
Then hubby and I went to lunch with my old roommate from '89. She looks great - she's lost 100 lbs in the past year - first time she has ever, ever weighed less than me. Really good to see her.
Then hubby and I went and spent our JCPenney gift certicates FIL gave us for Xmas. We bought draperies (you know curtains, window coverings) for the family room/breakfast nook. We've only been in our house 2yrs. 11mo. and we finally have curtains in the family room/breakfast nook. Dave hung them Sat night and they look great! So weird having a house with curtains! So much color compared to white blinds.
We also ordered a custom wood blind for the window over the kitchen sink - that should be in end of next month. Real nice to not still look like we just moved in :)
Sun morning:
Visited my doggy, Banxs, who now lives with my ex-FIL, he (the dog) turned 13 last Friday. Took Baby M along we even stopped and bought the dog "Frosty Paws" at the grocery store. She was such a well-behaved, polite, cute, adorable, little girl. Basically a little showoff flaunting her smile and happy little disposition, petting & hugging the dog. And very happy to climb up and down a step into the sunken living room for most the time we talked/visited.
Sun night:
Went over a neighbor's house, Karyn, - for a Mom's night she planned. Met a bunch of neighbors for the 1st time, or got to know a few a little better than I may have been introduced to once or twice.
My observations:
2 white moms, the rest black moms and one Filipino/black mom.
Out of this I was the only mom with only 1 child.
One mom with 4 adopted kids (3 Indian, 1 chinese) who is in the process of adopting their 5th - a 14 yr. old Ukrainian boy.
One mom with 4 boys, one with 3 boys, the rest with 2 or 3 kids, and several with step-children, as well.
One mom 8+ months pregnant.
An engineer, a computer programmer, two teachers, an accountant, several clerical jobs, one asset manager, and a couple of SAHMs.
Hobbies included singing in church choirs, genealogy, scrapbooking, kickboxing, home decorating, gardening, etc. Musical tastes included 60s rock, R&B, Jazz, Celtic music, Classical, Easy Listening, etc. But I guess the things I really noticed the most were the cultural differences between the women of different races, and how that was displayed in their musical tastes and hobbies - very interesting.
The other thing I have reflected on after visiting in Karyn's house was the vast difference in home decor between many of my neighbors (whose homes are very similar) and myself (the odd one out).
In our house we have tons of bookcases and books on display in our family room - none of our neighbor's have this.
Most of our neighbor's homes are very sparsely decorated with a few pieces of art. Though all seem to have family portraits and family photos, the differences my husband and I have noticed in artwork is that many of the white neighbors have pictures that are pretty scenes (fruit, landscapes, etc) and many of the black neighbors have that, as well as, artwork that represent black empowerment or black power.
Most of our neighbors have decorating taste that just remind me of a model home with large plush contemporary furniture. And then there is our house - a "Victorian" living room with "Medieval" & "Elizabethan" elements, and rather than new plush fabric furniture we have a huge amount of antiques and even the new stuff is wooden mission-style furniture, not contemporary style plush stuff. hmmm.... not good or bad just different tastes.. And this contemporary showroom look as opposed to my neighbors from where I used to live in PA where I swear everything was decorated very, very "Country" with lots of wicker, wooden nicknacks, gingham prints, and such...
And I also noticed the clutter - our house and most of our friends homes has a much higher level of clutter, with kids toys, books, mail & magazines, than any of our neighbors homes. Is that a cultural thing? or is that a family of origin thing? wondering...
