Also cross stitch, which I've spent probably at least a couple of hours a day on this week.

2. What was your first fandom?
Life on Mars (UK)

Holmes and Watson live a happy retirement together in Sussex.
Adam Carter and Lucas North belong together, regardless of the fact they only had one episode together.

4. Have you ever created fanworks?
I write fanfiction

5. Are you still active in any old fandoms?
I still occasionally write drabbles/ficlets for Life on Mars.  And, of course, Sherlock Holmes is considerably older than even I am!

1) I find the results of this research on people finding medical information to be sad but unsurprising. "Certain groups are particularly likely to say they get health and wellness information from influencers, including adults under 50; Black, Hispanic and Asian Americans; and those without health insurance."

The thing is though, the topics revealed in the study have very little to do with health and medicine and a lot more to do with appearance and weight (plastic surgeons are influencers!) This makes sense, both because women outnumber men as both influencers and viewers, and also because this area of "health" is particularly apt to be a source of revenue for influencers, whether trolling for clients or selling people stuff they think will help them. The number of people who even claim a medical background or auxiliary medical training are outnumbered by people who don't.

2) I mentioned in my last post watching the Roku Soccer Comes to America documentary. Although not that enlightening to somebody who lived through virtually all of it, two things were singled out as being critical to truly establishing the sport which I hadn't thought about. I found it an interesting coincidence that Ted Turner should die at the same time I was seeing it. Read more... )

3) Saw all of S2 of Percy Jackson and I think I enjoyed it more than S1. Read more... )

4) Daredevil's second season is more of a favorite for me than the 1st. Read more... )

5) I speed watched High Country. Read more... )

Today is V E Day - Victory in Europe Day, when Germany surrendered at the end of WWII.  In memory of those from many countries who fought and died in the conflict, this is a collage of some of the gravestones we saw on our recent holiday.

Demons and Bots

I’m embarrassed to say that I started reading Martha Well’s Queen Demon on April 3 – and then set it aside, resuming on April 17. From that point, I’d nibble at the book in 10-15 page bites on random evenings. At that rate, progress was slooooow. Sure, there were plenty of evenings when I didn’t touch the book. The lack of momentum was not because the book was bad – it was more a reflection of my lack of free time. I’m a little mortified to admit how long it took me to read 10 pages.

I did not finish the book until this morning. It took more than a month for me to finish a single book. I’ve reduced my tsundoku stack by one book. 😑

Excuses, Below the Cut )

It’s good that I finished Queen Demon today, as tomorrow night I’m going to a book signing: Martha Wells - Platform Decay.

Future Murderbot and Rising World books are discussed in a Martha Wells Interview at Polygon (via [personal profile] thewayne).

We've taken this week off work with no children (after Monday's bank holiday) for the first time in 8 years. The idea being that we could spend a bit of time with each other, spend a bit of time decompressing, and do some stuff around the house that was never happening when there were children underfoot

So yesterday we went out and had a relaxed day together at Jupiter Artland, essentially the fields and woods around an old country house with sculptures installed intermittently, so that you can have a lovely scenic walk intermittently punctuated by conversations about whatever you've just encountered. I had been there once before, a decade ago. Jane hadn't been there before at all, so it was a nice morning out.

And then today we had some actual energy to put into making the house nice. The "playroom" has been a dumping ground for kids toys for the last 2 years, since we moved back in. Every bit of plastic nonsense we'd accumulated for the past 8 years, either bought, given to us, or arriving on the front of magazines - sitting in boxes or bags or piled on shelves. Our cleaner Lana had repeatedly done an amazing job of sorting it thematically, only for us to then be too sick, tired, or otherwise incapable of doing anything about it. Turns out what we needed was a few days in a row with no children to let us recharge to the point where we could actually motivate ourselves.

So we just removed 8 bin bags full of stuff from the "playroom" and put them in the bins at the end of the street. And also about 3 bins bag of stuff are in the drive and will go to the charity shops when I pick up the kids at 5pm. And now Sophia's room has a floor and we will be able to put a bed in there.

(Undoubtedly the children will have questions when they get home.)

Ask For Some Points!

1) Hopefully everyone has been enjoying [community profile] 3weeks4dreamwidth activities! Your help is now needed for a new one, finding Dreamwidth point giftees.

Paid features are the only way to support Dreamwidth financially, but people who want these services can't always get them for financial or logistical reasons. Thanks to donor pledges, we can now provide points to as many as 68 people, but in order for this to work, people need to step forward! Follow the link above to find out more. Donors and giftees both participate anonymously through screened comments.

If you do not need points yourself, please share the information and above link to others on your own account or in communities. There are lots of helpful features offered in paid accounts, such as the polling functions (which I use below in every post 🙂). So it's a win-win!

2) Speaking of Dreamwidth, I know someone else recently mentioned these issues too, but I have been having recurring problems for months now. The main issue is that it takes a really long time for pages to open when I click on them. I'll click on a link and nothing will happen. Read more... )

3) Some of the birds seem pretty clear that the scary hoomans inside are responsible for refilling those plates. Nothing like getting shade from a morning dove who hasn't been fed.

4) For May the Fourth, rewatched part of S1 of The Mandalorian. I can't remember when we watched it the first time, but having searched my account, apparently we finished the season in mid-July 2020 (so I'm guessing we started it either that month or in late June). Read more... )

5) Roku got me by promoting its Soccer Meets America documentary, which covers for the umpteenth time the evolution of soccer as a national sport. Read more... ) Apparently the 1994 men's team, having just been eliminated from the Cup, had gone to a nearby restaurant after the loss. The U.S. official with them said everyone was very down, not only because of the loss, but because a decade of work had gone into developing the team for the competition. All of that for just four games.

Then a few minutes after being seated, Robin Williams comes through the door. He goes over to the table and knows all the players' names. They're all amazed as he begins to tell jokes and chat with them, feeling that they must have arrived after all. Having turned the mood around entirely, the official said that, of all Williams' performances, that the half hour with the team was his most impressive.

Courses - February to April 2026

Open Learn

The Restless Universe
My interest is more looking at the stars and planets and this course was more concerned with the physics of this planet, so, although I completed the course, I don't think I gained much from it.

Lottery of Birth
As might be expected this looks at the different factors which can affect how a child will grow up and thrive, or not. I don't think I learnt anything new.

Exploring Ovid's Big Ideas
I studied Ovid's Metamorphoses for Latin O-level an eon ago, but, if anything, by the end of the course I was less interested in Ovid that when I started.

An Introduction to Geology
Life in the Palaeozoic
Earthquakes

Looking around for something to study, I decided a look at how our planet is formed might be interesting. I know a little more now, but wouldn't say this was a subject I'd be particularly interested in progressing with. However, they all helped with building the big picture of 'life'.

Having looked at most of the OpenLearn courses I'm currently interested in, and, in the case of some of the scientific courses, can actually understand, I've now picked out a few FutureLearn courses to continue to widen my horizons.

Taken at 22:25 Eastern US Daylight Time over the parking lot joining Winn-Dixie and a local hotel, the latter outlined by its lights.

Once again, the photo doesn’t reflect what my corrective-lensed eyes actually saw—a serenely luminous disc the pale yellow of Muenster cheese—but the image is stark and dramatic. The lens flare on my cheap-ass burner phone made it resemble a black star sapphire (or, to read the image as suitably floral and local, a spider lily):

(I wasn’t the only one prowling this clear moonlit tropical night in search of food; two of the Burrowing Owls at my apartment complex were out hunting on the side lawn, as a third stood perched at the nest; this represents a full year of continuous occupancy and breeding, reflecting how safe they must feel here. They squawked at my approach, but did not hiss.)
