MDRF first weekend was exhausting but fun
Aug. 30th, 2004 10:57 amWhat shopping I got done on Saturday:
1. Jester costume (Moresca) for Baby M
2. Two dresses with bodices (Unicorn clothing) for Baby M
3. White lace-eyelet bloomers for me (Unicorn clothing)
4. Moccasins (Medieval Moccasins) on order to pick up next week for Baby M
5. Sage Green Skirt to match my new corset (found a pretty fairy petticoat skirt at Noblesse)
Shopping we didn't get done:
1. New Feather (Tall Toad) for my teal flat cap.
2. Cod piece for hubby - have to check back in a few weeks since they didn't have any
Sewing that I got done last week:
1. Let out seam allowance on Baby M's muffin cap and now it fits perfectly
Sewing to do list for coming weeks:
1. Let out the hem on my yellow skirt
2. Hem the two new dresses for my daughter about 1/2 inch (damn she's a short little kid)
3. Sew a yellow skirt for her.
Saturday we bailed by 5 (just too damn f***ing hot!!!) But it was so great to see everyone and catch up. Though not enough time with anyone. Babies born since last year, couples married since last year, couples separated since last year, faire friends we only see once a year, how much all our friends kids have grown, friends that have lost 40 lbs, friends that have gained 40 lbs, friends we miss, and of course the idiots we really wished wouldn't come back to faire ever ever again. Did tons of shopping that first day, try to get it mostly done with first weekend, so we can chill the rest of faire and maybe see some shows next week? yes they have shows at faire - just never see them till mid-season it seems.
Our friend William made the largest most awesome "baby cage" cart that we got to put our little one in for awhile. That is someone with a neat imagination and too much time on his hands (he he)
However, the flogging/bondage show in the parking lot just outside of the gate at 7 on Sunday was a bit much - this is a "family event", duh? take it home or to a hotel or something? But I guess once you are outside the gate - security/faire management doesn't really care? or do they and is there someone that would have done anything? just glad our little one is too small to have noticed it
Sunday we had the forge (hubby's colonial blacksmithing gig) from 1-4 then headed over to the faire, so got to faire after 5pm. This is the first I dressed up "Colonial" for the mill. It was really fun. I only just got my colonial apron, scarf and cap that I had ordered. So I could finally dress up with hubby and the baby. I wore a chemise with burgundy skirt. Just swapped my colonial cap for a ponytail, took off the colonial pinner apron & scarf, put on my waist cincher and poof from 1780 to 1530's.... For the baby we put her in a chemise and only had to take off the colonial bonnet and apron, and she was all set for faire.
And did I mention hubby, and baby will be on an upcoming Harford County ADC map in their colonial garb? not sure if it will be the 2005 or 2006, whether it will be the book or the soft map, but I'll let you know when it comes out.
Over at the colonial mill I found out they are having a "colonial stays sewing class" in November and another in March. The class is limited to 10 people - for $125 they provide the period correct material for the stays (though boning is an additional fee) and it is a Saturday and Sunday "all day class". And you walk away with a finished set of stays (aka Colonial bodice). I've not attempted anything so elaborate yet (as a boned bodice), and the class is after faire season so maybe? I'll check the dates. And the bodices/corsets I've bought have cost between $95 and $165 dollars - so maybe I should learn how to make my own? However I don't have a portable sewing machine only one built into a cabinet - so I'll have to see if one of my wenchly friends might loan me a machine for the weekend? anyone? Guess I could take the entire cabinet machine along - but that seems a bit much.
Also, need to take way more pictures at faire. Of friends, of the baby, etc. etc. Somehow it was like I forgot I even had the camera with us - we were just so busy watching our heads spin opening weekend. And the poor baby, she was so exhausted when I woke her for a bath this morning before taking her to daycare. She passed out last night before her bath and I couldn't send her to school with black faire dirt all encrusted on her feet and under her neck and everywhere. Poor little girl!
See you all next weekend and we can do it all over again! Dirt and heat and tired and everything! Huzzah!
my calves, and feet are so sore and I have a few bruises I didn't have on Friday...
