Not just their bank getting ticked off, either. That shows up on the stuff that insurance folk look at... and it'll be likely to raise their rates in the future.
We got lucky when we had a burst pipe while in Oregon. Our house *had* been kept warm enough that it shouldn't have been a problem (cold snap, what can you do), and it was a duplex, our neighbor noticed slight seepage before the level got more than 5 inches... *and* the fire departement was quick in shutting off the water, and helped break the toilet off its base to allow for draining (we'd left a key with the neighbor just in case anything happened). There was still plenty of damage though... guess where most of our books were kept... But because we'd kept the heat on (we were back and forth about every 3 months, with my in-laws checking on it at least once a month as well), the insurance covered it with no complaint.
