Pipes burst at our next door neighbor's house

(Ignore this if you've already read it on my hubby's LJ)

We have single family houses - they are NOT attached so we shouldn't see any damage to our house.

My husband noticed this morning that the house next door to us has ice running down the outside of the wall closest to our house. There's too much of it for it to be from roof runoff, and it starts halfway down the outside wall, just about where the first floor ceiling is, hence, where the pipes are.

All of the windows visible from the front of the house are fogged up or covered in condensation, most likely from a house that’s too humid. And for it to be too humid while the outside temperature is below freezing is probably due to burst pipes.

Hubby called the water emergency line (utility company) and reported that the water needs to be shut off. He will call back tonight and/or tomorrow to find out if the situation has been resolved.

We have seen no signs of occupation of the house in three to four months. The heat has apparently been shut off, and now pipes have burst. I don’t even want to know what the interior looks like, nor what it’s going to look/smell like come spring. It’s going to need serious mold abatement, and probably need to be mostly gutted and rebuilt before it can be sold.

As this is right next door to us, my husband is concerned about our property value with a condemned house next door. He is going to to run by @ lunch today to get some pictures of things before they all melt away.

This is really sad since we're in a new neighborhood and the house is only 2 1/2 years old. Dumb idiot neighbors! Rumor has it they are getting divorced and may have defaulted on their house mortgage, and now have ruined the house.

They moved out one day while we were at work, and neighbors told us it was a big ordeal with police and screaming and everything. Didn't know them real well and not sure what went wrong - but think it is so sad since they have a LO only 3 weeks older than ours.

today's excitement in the hood...

Update One (1pm) :

Hubby went home at lunch to check the neighbor's house. He took pictures - there is a waterfall coming out of their second story bathroom running down the outside of the house.

When he sends me the pictures - I've give you a link to where I've posted them.

Update Two (2pm):

Hubby just called again. They had the fire department shut off the water to our neighbor's house. And they looked in the windows. Some of the ceiling on the first floor are collapsing from water damage... Wow...

He's now headed back to work...
